Counseling Program
Counseling Program
The counseling program is an essential and valuable part of the Benway School experience. Each student is seen on an individual basis by licensed and certified clinicians at least once a week. In addition, various therapy groups are formed during the year according to student needs and interests. Crisis prevention work is ongoing and integrated into the therapeutic and academic setting. The therapists meet with parents throughout the year for supportive services. They also work with district schools and interface with hospital and outpatient programs in which the students may be involved.
Group Counseling
Students learn a deeper understanding about the concept of self-esteem. The group activities focus on the development of a positive sense of self. The students will acquire the skills and insight necessary to conduct themselves more appropriately in both academic and social settings.
Girl’s Group/Boy’s Group
The Girls’ Group empowers our female students to become independent thinkers. It explores the roles and expectations that females have played in history, entertainment, and in their community. Our expectation is that each member will be able to recognize the positive characteristics and contributions associated with being a female and make personal changes that will not only impact their lives, but also, the lives of others.
Boys’ Group presents our male students the opportunity to let their guard down and discuss their intimate concerns that are not normally addressed in an open forum. The students explore the challenges and obstacles that are faced by the average young adult male in today’s society. Their success is predicated on their ability to solve daily problems in a rational and coherent manner utilizing resources available to them within their grasp.
